Harold illustrating the frustrating quagmire of the dreaded "Birds nest"

As a beginner with your first new bait caster reel, this can be an all too familiar sight.  Even if you're an experienced fisherman and familiar with casting 3 and 4 oz. weights and all of a sudden you find yourself on a big, fast moving river that requires the use of heavier weights such as 10, 12, maybe even 14 to 16 oz. weights, you'll find that your tried and true practice of setting your anti-backlash control must change to accommodate the increased weight.  This may not be a practice you'll want to use every time you set out to go fishing, but when you're starting out and you have yet to master the skill of thumbing the reel, this exercise can save a lot of time and frustration.  Even your more experienced fisherman will take the time to fine tune his equipment when it really counts, such as on tournament day.
Start with your pole rigged up and ready to use.  Select the size of sinker you'll most likely be using on your fishing trip.   Attach the sinker to your line by whatever means or method you'll be using.  If you will be using a variety of different sized weights over the course of the day, it might be wise to choose the weight that will be on the heavier end of your selections.  For example, if you will be fishing 6 to 8 oz. current and will likely fish some 10 to 12 oz. current also, choose the 10 oz. weight to set your anti-backlash control.  Better a little tight than a little loose.  If the control is a little too tight once you have made your initial cast at the first fishing hole, tension can be backed off quite easily.        Tournament winning catfishing techniques on big rivers. Next snug up the Anti-backlash control on the side of your reel.

Next snug up the Anti-backlash control on the side of your reel.  Harold is using a Quantum Cabo in the illustration which has the anti-backlash control located on the right-hand side of the reel behind the drag wheel.  Different manufacturers will place the anti-backlash control in different locations on their reels, so look for a small adjustment knob on either side of your reel, depending on its manufacturer.  Once you have located the anti-backlash control, turn the adjustment knob clockwise, tightening the control.  It is not necessary to exert intense pressure on the control at this time, as we are merely trying to get an idea where the control is relative to the amount of weight we are using.  Later, after a couple of adjustments, you will gain a feel for the pressure needed to accomplish sufficient backlash protection.
